May Teachers of the Month - Partners in Education

The 2023-2024 school year is right around the corner! We’re excited for back-to-school season, but first, we’re celebrating our Teachers of the Month from May. Read about our awesome teachers:

Erik Anderson
Mr. Anderson is described as a true unsung hero in the Shaker Heights School District. “Erick teaches adaptive physical education, which means he works with children that have learning disabilities. Because of his work, these children get to experience gym class and learn motor skills, games and generally do things that all of the other kids get to do,” says James Brady.

Crystal Miller
Crystal helped expand the typical elementary school music program to one that rivals other area schools. She started a Veterans Appreciation Day concert, which was a significant undertaking. She organized a second-grade musical, the Ukulele Ensemble, the second and fourth grade Recorder Ensemble and Heritage Harmonics. These events give students the opportunity to participate in something and help them build their confidence.

Rusty Hutchinson“Hutch, as he is affectionately called by staff and students, is the first man in and last man out,” says administrator Kristin Mills. “He has only missed two days of school in 19 years. When you walk into his classroom, students are learning. He’s extremely positive and mild-mannered. He teaches like he’s coaching the World Series. He does the dirty work; he analyzes outcomes and prepares lessons with individual needs in mind.”

“Mary Nie is an exceptional energetic teacher,” saysMary Nie Regina Hensley, a faculty member at the school. “Mary is one of the kindest, most loving and caring individuals I have ever met. She was instrumental in introducing a ‘House System’ in our school.” The House System encourages students in different grades to get to know one another. Nie also took time to apply for a grant to revive the school vegetable garden. She is described as amazing and is a devoted teacher and faculty member.

Sarah Harrington
Sarah is a dedicated teacher who works tirelessly to meet the needs of her students. “Her planning for daily instruction is remarkable and should be modeled by every teacher in Ohio. Our children are fortunate that Sarah works in our district, and they have the opportunity to spend time with her every day,” says principal Nate Smith.

Anthony Xenos

Anthony is described as a teacher that goes above and beyond. He provides students with opportunities that are enriching, and he goes out of his way to help any student in the building.

Melissa Rodhe
Melissa is a caring and compassionate educator who students and peers can lean on. She forms relationships with her students to help them find something positive about coming to school and gives them a purpose to come to school. “The rapport she is able to build with students is invaluable,” says Carrie Maltarich, a faculty member at the school.

Danielle McMillen

Danielle is a passionate hard worker. Administrator Jody Ditcher says, “Typically Mrs. McMillen’s students make tremendous growth and improve their overall levels of achievement. In addition, they learn to love math as their teacher also loves math.”

Leslie Medves

Leslie is described as an “excellent teacher” who is always willing to take the time and make sure that students understand the material. She is kind and always willing to answer questions. She is a dedicated teacher who really cares about her students.
