$1 Million Powerball Win Claimed in the Nick of Time

People buy lottery tickets all the time and forget about them. They tuck them away in the glove box in the car, crumple them up in pockets and sometimes just throw them away. A recent $1 million winner is familiar with that scenario.

Facebook post announcing Ohio sold a $1 million winning Powerball ticket in the October 16, 2019 drawingJerry from Springfield found his forgotten ticket in his wallet, just days before it was set to expire. He was traveling a lot as his brother battled cancer. On one of their trips for treatment, he bought a Powerball ticket at a gas station along the highway. He tucked it in his wallet and forgot about it. That was in October.

Last month, Jerry was getting ready for a doctor appointment of his own. He was looking for his doctor’s card in his wallet, and when he pulled it out the rolled-up nearly six months old Powerball ticket came out with it. He went to the website to check his ticket and discovered five matching numbers.

“I thought, this is not a joke! So, I asked my wife to check the numbers too,” he said.

She checked, and he had in fact matched five numbers in the October 16, 2019 drawing. But his biggest surprise came when he double checked the prize amount.

“I think it’s $100,000. I went to the website and looked at prizes and low and behold it’s a million dollars!” he said.

Jerry couldn’t wait to claim the prize, especially since it was days away from expiring. But he found the ticket as Ohioans were told to stay home in the battle against the Coronavirus and Ohio Lottery offices were closed. Jerry was urged to mail in his claim. He said he was nervous to mail such a big winning ticket, but he talked to lottery staffers and kept in touch throughout the claims process.

Now he can celebrate, and more importantly, share his win with the people he loves most.

“I’m going to share this win with my family. I want to put some money away for my kids and help my family in other ways,” Jerry said.

We're glad he found it!

Ohio Lottery Commits to Furthering Ohio Education through Its Partnership with the Scripps National Spelling Bee

No doubt, education plays a critical role in child and teen development. However, we understand that educational opportunities may not be the same or available to all. That’s why we’re dedicated to making sure these doors of opportunity are accessible to all students across the great state of Ohio.

Scripps-OH-Lottery.JPGAs an organization, our mission is to offer entertaining games that maximize profits for K-12 public education. In 2019 alone, we proudly provided $1.15 billion toward Ohio’s education fund.
One long-standing initiative we are proud to continue is our local partnership with Scripps National Spelling Bee, which enables us to help address these challenges in Ohio and locally sponsor school participation every year.

The Ohio Lottery has served as a Scripps National Spelling Bee local partner since 2008, helping them promote their mission to further the education of students by improving their spelling and increasing their vocabularies.

The partnership originated after we noticed the lack of participation in regional spelling bees from Ohio schools in lower-income areas. To even the playing field among Ohio students, we annually pledge to assist these schools by covering the cost of resources for their students. This includes the cost of study materials and enrollment.

Currently, our pledge benefits more than 1,100 Ohio schools and 30,000 Ohio students and several representatives from across Ohio qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee every year.
We are honored to partner with an organization that shares our same vision to benefit Ohio education.
Need to refresh your spelling skills? Join the fun and put your skills to the test throughout April by following our Instagram account, @ohlottery, where we’ll be hosting biweekly spelling bees on our Stories.

Game Alert: Mega Millions and Powerball Games Changing

Once the current Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots are hit, both games will eliminate the minimum starting jackpot and minimum jackpot increases as a direct result of slowing sales during the current global pandemic.

The Mega Millions Consortium will determine the amounts of starting jackpots and jackpot increases on a drawing-by-drawing basis. The next starting jackpot and the rate at which the jackpot increases will be established based on game sales and interest rates, with no fixed minimum amount. Jackpots will be determined and announced prior to each drawing. Previously, the jackpot started at $40 million, and the minimum increase was $5 million for each roll.

Mega Millions tickets are $2. Drawings are held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 p.m.

Once the current Powerball® jackpot is hit, guaranteed starting jackpot amounts and minimum jackpot increases will be eliminated. Future jackpot increases will be determined based on interest rates and sales and announced by the Product Group prior to each drawing. Previously, Powerball® jackpots started at $40 million and increased by a minimum of $10 million between drawings.

The Powerball Product Group announced the changes to ensure the game continues to support good causes in all 48 U.S. lottery jurisdictions. The changes come as the current global pandemic has changed consumer behavior resulting in slower sales.

Powerball tickets are $2 per play. Drawings are held on Wednesday and Saturday nights at 10:59 p.m.
